Architects and the Year 2000 Issue

20 Mar 99.

The AIA web site has resources for those architects concerned about the Y2K Bug and how it may affect their practice. According to the AIA, architects need to be concerned not only about the computer hardware and software in their office, but about the embedded chips and hardware installed in new buildings. Embedded chips can be found in many HVAC, mechanical and electrical control devices typical of today's modern building systems. Architects need to be aware of the many devices they specify than contain such embedded chips.

On the computer software front, there is generally good news for architects, as CAD software is typically not "date dependent". However, architects should be concerned about older software in the spreadsheet, financial, and project management categories, and consult their makers regarding software patches and updates. Operating systems that may have problems include Microsoft's Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and versions of Windows NT prior to NT 5. Microsoft's web site has a Year 2000 Resource Center, complete with an online seminar that addresses fixing the Y2K issue. As many of you know, Apple's Macintosh operating system is internally compliant with the Y2K Bug.

Likewise, Macintosh hardware, including printers, servers, displays, etc. are all Y2K compliant, according to industry experts. Apple has specific information on the issue on their web site. IBM clones made before April 1997 are vulnerable to the Y2K Bug, according to the USA Today. Upgrading the BIOS by downloading an updated version from your PC maker should fix the problem, but not necessarily completely, according to the AIA. Users should contact their PC manufactures for detailed information.
