Getting Ready for Mac OS 9: Internet Resource Guide

22 October 99.

Tomorrow is the official launch date for Mac OS 9! And for many of us the new OS will be able to instantly provide new advanced features which we can put to use. Here at Architosh, for instance, Sherlock II will provide a more focused utility for CAD news hunting. However, one of the new features Anthony Frausto, editor of Architosh, is anxious for is the new "panels" limited environment which will provide a new childproof environment for his two year old son (who is becoming too Mac savvy for his own good) to do his computer playing in. It's a great new feature of the multi-user environment that anyone with young kids will really appreciate.

For professional users -- those that make their money on the Mac -- there are a number of concerns which must be addressed before upgrading. With that in mind we have compiled a number of excellent resources (special reports on OS 9) from various Mac news sites, software sites and Apple.

Guide To Mac OS 9 User Resources

  • Mac News Network's Mac OS 9 Special Report and Visual Tour. This is a good place to start to learn about OS 9 in depth. It goes further in presenting the many interface features than even Apple does on their site. Excellent starting point, plus a growing comprehensive list of third party software that is already compatible with Mac OS 9.
  • MacFixIt's has a Troubleshooting Mac OS 9 Report. This site goes over the many improved networking features of OS 9, including special enhancement for improved cable and DSL Internet access connections. ATI driver and OpenGL (import for graphics and CAD pros) conflicts and solutions are listed. Other issues covered in this report include HP printer conflicts, Apple ColorStyleWriter 4000 series incompatibilities and AppleWorks 5.0.4 updater for OS 9.
  • MacWindows.com has a Report on Mac OS 9 Cross-Platform Issues. There is good news here in regards to working with other platforms, including UNIX's. Mac OS 9 has improvements with TCP/IP, Open Transport, better support for PC USB peripherals and other system features. AppleShare Client 3.8.5 ships with its server component as well, for the first time ever with Mac OS. This is essential for the new capabilities of File Sharing over the Internet.
  • Apple Developer Technote 1176 - Mac OS. This report -- although geared for programmers -- has tons of valuable information understandable to any advanced Macintosh users or IT manager. This information is quite extensive -- and there are really good diagrams explaining many of the new aspects of Mac OS 9 to aid the reader in understanding items -- covers all of the new features in the OS in great detail.
  • MacInTouch Mac OS 9 Special Report: Mac OS 9-Packages. Packages are a very useful and cool new technology borrowed from NeXTSTEP that allow developers to represent a hierarchy of files and folders as a single "file" with internal files and folders hidden from the user. The new NeXTSTEP packages technology is discussed in detail in Apple Developer Technotes 1188.
  • MacWEEK and MacCentral Special Mac OS 9 Report. This report not only covers the new features in summary form but lists resources on the web for further research (in much the same way the listed items above are referenced). Good links include Jobs' demos of OS 9 and Mac OS X links.
  • Apple's Mac OS 9 product web pages. Meet your new Internet co-pilot!. Apple's definitive pages covering the new OS upgrade. Includes info on prices, $20 rebate offer for Mac OS 8.5/8.6 users.
