Architosh Special Feature: VectorWorks ARCHITECT Preview 2
Here is the second preview report on VectorWorks ARCHITECT, as promised. We are still exploring this new add-on application to MiniCAD VectorWorks 8.5 (required version - which is why you should make sure your copies are registered so that you can receive the free 8.5 update on CD-ROM). What follows are views of each new menu change, across the entire main menu bar. File Menu: New menu items include the VA (VectorWorks ARCHITECT) Project Setup and new VA Preferences, which includes things like VA Records and Schedules, Current Note Sets and Wall Types, Door and Room Libraries, and Wall Type Libraries -- preference settings for each of those items.
Tools Menu. Drafting Aids is moved to this location but is not new. It used to live at the Design Menu. This location is more logical, as it is now associated with tools that help you draw or manipulate things that you draw, as in Align, Trim, etc.. Please note that keyboard shortcuts for some items -- and this applies to all menu items -- are different because they reflect customizations made to our office's VectorWorks 8.5.
Organize Menu. This menu remains essentially the same, with the addition of the Task Manager. We will talk about Task Manager separately below and/or in a separate report.
Model Menu. This menu has a number of new elements, including Building Elements, Show 3D Detail, and Hide 3D Detail and Create Solar Animation. The DTM (digital terrain modeler) is also here as well.
Palettes Menu. This menu features the new Object Browser, a new item in VectorWorks 8.5 which we discussed in some detail in our first preview article. This menu features the new RenderWorks palette, Walls palette, Editing palette and other palettes highlighted below.
Design Menu. This menu features many of the new and enhanced tools for preliminary phase, planning and programming stages of architectural practice. Note that the green-highlighted items on the AEC workspace in VectorWorks 8.5 are not relocated to any menu within ARCHITECT. These items will remain accessible from within the AEC workspaces. Drafting Aids is also relocated to another menu altogether.
Notes is a new menu to ARCHITECT while the AEC menu within the AEC workspace in VectorWorks 8.5 is now gone. All of the items on the Notes menu pertain to the new features in ARCHITECT that pertain to the tasks of noting architectural documents (all phases - from schematic design through construction drawings). Here you will find the Redlines menu item and Issue Manager, all new tools very important to managing documentation for teams by group leaders and project architects.
There are other menus -- to look at them see the first article -- but they do not have any changes made to them and the Help menu is essentially the same. Clearly there are many submenus to get into as well and we will describe more features in our next preview report on VectorWorks ARCHITECT.
