Reader Q: "About viewing Autocad files via browser plugins"
A lot of readers -- many of them non-technical professionals -- write in with questions about viewing Autocad files on the Macintosh or from within a Web browser on any platform. A recent reader wrote in with: "Are there any affordable applications or Netscape plug-ins (preferably shareware or freeware) that can view AutoCAD DWG/DWF files? Thanks." -- J. Sapers Here are some possibilities to this question: CADviewer by Arnona Internet Software Inc. is a Java Applet for viewing Autocad DWG native files on any platform that supports a Java Runtime Environment. For more info click here. CADMover 5.0 by Kandu Software Corp. is a vector translator for converting graphic file formats from different applications (CAD) and hardware platforms. With this application you could possibly convert Autocad files to a file format version that your graphics or CAD applications could read, eliminating the need to buy Autocad Light or another viewer application. Autodesk makes browser-based viewing products for Windows users only. If you are using a Macintosh G3 or better, running with a minimum of 64 MB or RAM a possible solution for you (besides purchasing a seperate PC computer) would be to run Virtual PC 95 or Virtual PC 98 by Connectix. You would then be able to install and run the Windows-only plugin applications from Autodesk Another option, going in this vain, is to purchase the lowest-cost Autocad native CAD application from Autodesk and run this on a Macintosh G3 or better via Virtual PC 95/98. Autodesk's QuickCAD Millennium Edition release 7, is the lowest cost solution from Autodesk at just $59.
