MacCAD News: Diehl Graphsoft on Mac OS X, Macworld letter

5 May 00

Diehl Graphsoft's Recent Dispatch Newsletter - Mac OS X Comments

In the latest Dispatch Richard Diehl's "Letter from the President" has a number of reassuring words regarding the company's merger with Germany's Nemetschek. The first few words say:

"This strategic acquisition will allow us to accomplish one of our long-standing goals -- to become formidable adversaries of Autodesk. Our combined assets and access to Nemetschek technology moves us closer to achieving this goal"

Richard Diehl notes the company is currently working on VectorWorks 9 and on path. Regarding operating systems, the company notes that they have been hard at work "tailoring" VectorWorks to each operating system. That is good news for the Mac and certainly for Windows users as well.

In a sort of surprising comment, Diehl says, "Our longtime Mac users will be especially pleased with our support of Mac OS X." Could this be a hint that a version of VectorWorks could be ready for Mac OS X this summer? Mac VectorWorks users will certainly hope so.

It would be great to hear that the number one Mac CAD vendor is going to be ready for OS X. This bodes well for the technical Macintosh market which has recently been gaining new CAD and 3D applications, one for every three to six months in the last year. Recent OS X support has been announced for LightWorks 6 and A/W Maya for OS X, according to new Asian firm users, is all be a sure deal. So these OS X statements from Diehl Graphsoft is certainly good news.

Richard Diehl's Macworld Letter

In other news, Richard Diehl, CEO of Diehl Graphsoft, has a letter published in the latest Macworld magazine, June 2000 -- (you know, the one with the cute dog on the cover). Anyway, Richard's letter is on page 18, entitled "Your CADdish Review". Diehl takes issue with Macworld's Charles Seiter's review of DenebaCAD 2.0 (Reviews, March issue 2000). The primary issue Diehl has is with Seiter's assertion that "DenebaCAD's lack of a scripting language is not a problem".

Richard Diehl later ends by saying, "This is truly irresponsible journalism" ... referring to Seiter's comment "that DenebaCAD's only direct competitor is one that costs five times as much and takes longer to master." Hmm. Now we all know that Seiter is no doubt talking about Graphisoft's ArchiCAD (which is just around five times more expensive). But do you think harder to master?

This was a very tough thing to read, I must admit, when I read it a few days ago I was slightly surprised. Why only slightly? Well, because I had read Seiter's review of DenebaCAD 2.0 months earlier and was happy then that someone was paying attention to the new upcoming CAD app. After all, Architosh's business is to inform Mac users of options in CAD/AEC, and it was good to get some help.

I don't believe this letter was directed at Deneba for having a competitive CAD product. Surely Richard Diehl, being a long time Mac user, knows that the importance of perception of the Mac as being a valid CAD platform depends partly on the perception of the availability of technical software. If people don't think there is Mac CAD software, then the Mac will fail in this market. And that matters... since Diehl Graphsoft has built its company on Mac users.

This letter seemed to be very much directed at Macworld. Hopefully it will be a wake up call for them and Seiter to pay more time and attention to the technical CAD market for Macintosh. It is, after all, starting to grow again, and the market itself is growing more complicated. Which means Mac users don't need to be misguided.

Financial and Other Diehl Graphsoft News

First off, VectorWorks 8.5.2 update is released, and has been since April 20th. Mostly an overall stability boost. In addition, the ARCHITECT 1.0.1 update was released yesterday as well at the AIA Convention.

According to other company news, VectorWorks ARCHITECT sales are booming and have surpassed initial expectations.
