MacCAD News: ProEngineer for Mac OS X, petition wanted

18 May 00

David Smith, an information technologist at a prominent aerospace firm, asked us a ways back about starting a ProEngineer for Macintosh petition. David had wrote in very passionately about the lack of excellent mechanical CAD products for the Macintosh, notwithstanding Ashlar's very excellent VellumSolids.

But for David's needs, which involved high-level technical visualization tools, an advanced parametric modeler like ProE would serve the purpose if it was to be supported on the Macintosh.

ProEngineer is developed by Parametric Technologies Corp., in Massachusetts. The company prides itself on developing ProE for open heterogeneous platforms, allowing customers to take full advantage of legacy hardware and new technologies simultaneously. PTC has an "Enterprise Platforms" partners program, of which Sun (Solaris) and SGI (IRIX Unix) are members, as well as Compaq (Dec Alpha) and IBM and HP are some of the other UNIX variant producers as well as NT box makers.

ProE Petition Forum

At DemandMac, a discussion forums and petition site for Mac users (and a very good one too) Architosh has created a discussion thread for ProE on the Mac (specifically OS X). If you want to support ProE on Mac OS X or if you are a Macintosh-based engineer or industrial designer interested in this petition then go over and discuss it with fellow mechanical CAD users.

Apple, ProEngineer and VectorWorks on the Mac

Think Apple's famous industrial design group isn't cross-platform and heterogeneous in its selection of tools for doing the best job possible? It is. Just hop on over to Diehl Graphsoft's web site news section and select the story entitled, "Apple Computer Designers Integrate iBook Components in Record Time with MiniCAD 3D Technology". You will have to scroll to the bottom for this story in the Recent News section on the main News page. A great read!
