In the Forum: King & King Architects seek advice on CAD transition
One of the nice things about Architosh and its forums is that individuals share so much with us and other readers about their experiences. In the case of Adam Stone, of King & King, his request for feedback is of particular relevancy to the recent news. Large Mac-only Architecture Firm: Should they leave the platform? King & King Architects, LLP, is a large firm that has been on Architrion on the Macintosh for I believe quite awhile now. However, as news of Architrion's demise (or shall we call it a transition as the code will likely find a new home somewhere?) has come about all AEC professionals currently using Architrion have cause to begin what could be a painful process of transitioning to another CAD platform -- and in the King & King case, questioning OS platform as well. Specifically, Adam Stone wrote in our Forum:
"Our firm of approximately 50 people (30+ architects) is in the position of having to make a change in our CAD software. We are currently using Architrion on a Macintosh network and it has become evident that this is not viable software for the future. We have been looking at both VectorWorks and ArchiCAD. We have also been looking at the possibility of changing platforms and going with Autocad on Windows. I am interested to know of other user's experience with switchovers in terms of training, translation of files, etc. I am especially interested in finding any other firms similar in size who have faced this transition. Any information would be very helpful and I would greatly appreciate any feedback that you could give." King & King Seeks Advice from Architosh Community Specifically, if your firm has made a similar transition from Architrion to another CAD platform your experiences would be well appreciated at King & King. In particular, Architosh hopes some of you can also share your experiences with the "moving to Wintel argument (pro/con)" as well. Architosh seriously doubts that King & King will move away from the Macintosh. Especially since they are looking at two leading CAD products that are Mac-first, cross-platform products. And especially given the continuing surge in the platform. You can post your advice in the Architosh Forum or email Adam directly. Any thoughts you would like to share with the whole Architosh community on King & King's situation should be cc'd or sent to us at [email protected]. Thanks in advance.
