MacCAD News: Should we Mac users petition for Autocad on OS X?
Some issues never change. Take Autocad for instance. Many individuals in the AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) believe that without Autocad on the Macintosh the Mac will never be taken seriously as a viable CAD platform -- especially in architecture. Do you agree? Whether you are a Mac user or not you will no doubt question the implications of this reader's dilemma. Roan Vercammen, of Belgium, wrote in with this:
"My name is Roan Vercammen and I study architecture in Brussels, Belgium. I am what you can call a "Mac adept" . At school we use, as almost everywhere Autocad on Windoze NT stations, which is quite depressing :( " Most of you can probably relate to Autocad being depressing. He continues:
Should Autocad come to the Macintosh? So should we organize some petition for Autocad on the Macintosh? Would Mac users in the CAD/CAM market really use Autocad if it were available? Perhaps what Mac users would really like is for Autocad to make the DWG file format an open-industry standard so that other CAD companies don't have to get together to "reverse engineer" the file format -- which Autodesk keeps very close to its chest. See the OpenDWG Alliance for more info. Perhaps all we need is a Macintosh program for viewing, editing and printing Autocad files? Tell us what you think. Should we petition? UPDATE: We now have a petition email questionnaire. Click here.
