Mac3D News: Discreet's 3D/animation Mac products
Discreet, which is now a division of Autodesk Inc (the makers of Autocad), has three Macintosh products worth the 3D professionals consideration. The first of these, introduced at NAB 2000, is Combustion, a powerful paint, animation and 3D visual effects product for the Mac or NT desktop. Combustion combines for the first time on NT and Macintosh one solution for creating compelling visual effects in a true 3D compositing environment. A screen capture on the Discreet site shows this very well. Features include unified paint, animation, 3D compositing and an advanced, streamlined "artist" interface design. Other features include vector paint, multiple views, extensive caching and an advanced object oriented architecture. Input/output includes industry standards such as: QuickTime, AVI, JPEG, Electric Image, GIF, BMP, Photoshop, EPS, PICT, PNG, SGI, Targa, TIFF, and 3D StudioMax RLA and RPF files. NTSC and PAL display is supported with select video cards. Macintosh system requirements include: PowerPC processor G3 or G4 at 200MHz or better, Mac OS 8.1 or greater, 128 MB RAM free, 256 MB recommended and a 1024x768 display at 24-bit color. The next Macintosh product from Discreet is Effect, a next-generation 3D compositing, animation and visual effects tool for Macintosh and NT. You can produce Hollywood-caliber advanced motion effects with this product and it integrates smoothly with Combustion. Paint is the third Macintosh next-gen product from Discreet. Paint allows you to manipulate and enhance still frames and frame sequences on the Macintosh or Win95/NT platform using vector-based paint and animation. Combustion is scheduled to be released in Summer 2000 at a price of $3,495.
