Autodesk Unveils Cross-Platform, Cross-Industry Open XML Strategy for Design Data and E-Commerce

According to a press release issued early this month Autodesk is leading the CAD industry with XML strategies for design data and e-commerce on the Web. Their XML strategy is deliberately cross-platform and cross-discipline. At the center of this effort is XML (extensible markup language) an emerging standard syntax that facilitates the easy distribution of information across the Web, and will allow data integration across the entire building enterprise.

As part of this new initiative Autodesk has published a new RedlineXML scheme to Biztalk.org -- an organization developed by Microsoft to help set XML guidelines. According to the press release:

"A central element of Autodesk's XML strategy is facilitating e-commerce and ensuring compatibility between products in different segments of the design industry, including building design, mechanical, digital content creation, and GIS. To achieve these goals, Autodesk will focus its efforts on four key areas:

  • XML adoption throughout the Autodesk product line
  • Leveraging XML technology to ensure strong cross-product interoperability
  • Supporting and incorporating relevant industry XML initiatives
  • Leading the industry in the development and publishing of open XML schemas for design collaboration and e-commerce "

Platform Neutrality and XML

Although it seems odd to hear about a platform initiative from Autodesk that is vendor neutral, the embracing of XML as a language is inherently platform and vendor neutral. XML is an accepted new language standard by the W3C. According to comments from the press release:

'Industry analysts are recognizing the significant role XML will play in changing the Internet. "XML offers interoperability by providing a standardized, vendor-neutral, and level playing field on which languages, tools, and delivery products compete without impacting content or content providers," said Michael Goulde, senior analyst with the Patricia Seybold Group. "The fact is that XML will revolutionize the Web, will have a significant impact on how documents are created and displayed, and will impact distributed applications and data interchange as well." '
