Architosh Coverage of Macworld Expo

12 Jul 00

Anthony Frausto-Robledo, B.Arch., publisher of Architosh will be making the rounds at Expo next week. Like the prior year, Architosh will be publishing reports from the show floor. Unlike last year, pictures may come earlier in our series of reports.

What We are Hoping For

Chances are, if you read Architosh, you are hoping more than anything else that Steve Jobs unveils faster G4's and multiprocessor -based Power Macs. The long-awaited multiprocessor G4 towers, code named 'Mystic' are very likely to make an appearance. However, don't be surprised if they don't. Apple may prefer to unveil these machines at Seybold San Francisco in September.

In any case we will most likely see a new iMac version and Mac OS X Public Beta. Here's Architosh's unofficial prediction for the keynote: (in order of likeliness)

  • New iMacs (faster G3s, new form factor. possible DVD authoring w/ iMovie 2.0. Maybe a G4 version)
  • Mac OS X Pubic Beta (We think Jobs will have CD's on hand at keynote)
  • Multiprocessor G4 Power Macs (we hope. May wait until Seybold)
  • New Displays to go with new machines (again may wait until Seybold)
  • Speed-bumped G3 iBooks (May wait until November. DVD, bigger screen, etc.)
  • New PowerBooks (not likely until G4 works in one. Maybe at Seybold)

Jobs will likely start with financial/market share facts and then go into new partnerships, retail strategies, distribution, etc.etc. If Jobs hails the iTools section of Apple.com with stats he may announce new sections and abilities with iTools and stuff.

Jobs will likely segue into the new iMac in the middle, holding the suspense as long as possible. Then he will go over Mac OS X Public Beta and will likely spend some time with that. At that point he may bring on stage some ISVs (independent software vendors) who will be supporting OS X as well as the possibility of some key large companies that may be adopting it and have been testing it for some time now. Candidates for this include Disney, Pixar, and Boeing, but anyone could appear. Jobs is good at surprises.

Jobs will somewhere get into QuickTime 5 and it will likely be after the intro of OS X. QuickTime 5 will probably be one of a number of demonstrations of OS X ready products running quite fine under OS X PB (public beta). Another may be a cool game which will be on the OS X PB CD-ROM, as well as the possibility of a limited beta of Photoshop 6.

At this point the keynote could end but Jobs will likely do his signature move, "oh, I almost forgot...there's one more thing."

Now for those holding on to those Apple Palm PDA rumors, stop dreaming. More likely would be a set-top Internet appliance. This is the point where he may bring in the much rumored and long-awaited multiprocessor G4 Power Macs. He could also bring in a new PowerBook as well. Reports have suggested that we won't see a new PowerBook until a G4 works in it and that might take until next year. Anything can happen. And Jobs is the master of suspense and surprise.

One thing is very clear, though. Apple has been so quite for so long that the energy and anticipation in the first few minutes of the keynote is going to be positively electric. Everyone knows we are most likely getting Mac OS X PB CDs. That's no news. So Apple likely has one really big surprise in store for us.
