OS X Report
1: Installation and Initial Workings
As we previously mentioned, we had OS X for 48 hours prior to Saturday
morning launch events. Naturally we were excited to install it on
a new Titanium PowerBook G4 and put it through its paces. We have
been playing around with it for 24 hours now and have much to report.
Installation - How Was It?
In one word? "Simplicity". This is the most advanced
and friendly OS installer ever, period. Even easier than Mac OS
9. The whole process took about 15 minutes, not counting the 15
minutes it took to partition the drive on the new TiBook and reinstall
OS 9.1. The whole enchilada was a half hour job.
Steps Involved - How Many and What Kinds?
Step 1 involved reading the short
Read Me's and installation instructions on the Welcome to Mac OS
X manual (about 30 pages total). The install instructions are one
Step 2 was partitioning the drive
so that we can have a pure Mac OS 9.1 system to work on if need
be (like to run Dave and connect to PC networks or to utilize printer
drivers or apps not supported under Classic or OS X native). What
you end up with in the end are two partitions, one with OS 9.1 alone,
the other (first and larger partition) with both OS X and OS 9.1
for Classic environment.
That means you have two OS 9.1 environments. The OS 9.1 on its
own partition you can load up with extensions, fonts, etc. and run
all of the stuff you normally do. The OS 9.1 on the OS X partition
is a more light version (only necessary Extensions) which will run
better with Classic apps under OS X.
You can choose to boot up on either partition (OS) at any time
and you can choose which version of OS 9.1 you use as your Classic
OS from within OS X. Apple did a wonderful job of keeping things
very flexible for you so that you can migrate over time and go back-and-forth
Step 3 was the installation. It ran
in just 15 minutes. After the install the machine reboots itself
into OS X. The bootup in OS X is very fast (faster than 9.1 with
