Comdex and other Net tidbits - 1

Comdex kicked off Monday, a day of tragedy for the city of New York and a day in which this nation pays tribute to those who have paid the ultimate price for the love of country. While Americans coped with news of American Airlines Flight 587, the high tech industry was celebrating the future of technology at Comdex. Bill Gates kicked off the event with the keynote speech the night before.

So what is hot at Comdex?

Handspring announced that its new Treo PDA/phones will begin selling in January. The new device was started just 15 months ago. The company reports they have moved much of their engineering resources to wireless technologies. The Treo will initially operate on the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) network, a technology which won big a few weeks back when Cingular Wireless announced it would adopt GSM as the prevailing technology for its network. Handspring cofounder Jeff Hawkins will deliver a keynote speech this week at Comdex.

HP is getting adventurous with PC design, introducing ultra-slim designs with Compaq and a TV-like PC for next year. In a bit of irony, the PC side of computing will get access to 802.11a wireless devices before the Macintosh. Apple led the charge with 802.11b wireless with AirPort almost two years ago. Proxim will deliver 802.11a wireless kits for Macintosh in the first quarter of 2002. 802.11a is new incompatible wireless standard very similar to 11b but nearly 5 times faster.

Gates talked of the Tablet PC running a special tablet version of Windows XP. Gates has high hopes for the device which has technology similar to Apple's Newton handwriting recognition technology, circa 1993. The real question is, if such devices actually take off, with Apple have a product to counter with?

Stay at Home

With all of the tragic events in America and economic downturn worldwide, families are reportedly staying home for entertainment. This in turn is putting home entertainment systems and similar home technologies into higher demand. So perhaps the XBox has a future after all? Sony meanwhile is increasing production for the PlayStation 2 during the holiday season. To date Sony has shipped 19 million units worldwide.
