Kerris says: Apple talking to all major players of CAD, mCAD and
engineering for Mac OS X
Many folks know that Richard Kerris, who is currently Apple's senior
director of developer technologies, is the man (mostly) responsible
for bringing Maya to Mac OS X. His role at Apple since leaving SGI's
Alias/Wavefront unit has been to spearhead developer interest in
bringing more apps like Maya to the Mac OS X platform.
In a C/net
story on Apple's new X11 application, Richard remarks that Apple
is currently talking to all the major players of the high end of
the CAD, mCAD, and engineering CAD markets about bringing their
applications to Mac OS X. Many of these expensive solutions have
large installed bases on Sun, SGI, IBM and HP Unix hardware, all
of which are more expensive than Apple's Power Mac machines. However,
as the article states, X11
is and will continue to be a powerful tool for allowing developers
of Unix applications (for technical markets) to move their products
to the Mac OS X platform.
Interest in ProE, SolidWorks, CATIA and Autocad on OS X Very
Here at Architosh we have written several dozen articles over the
last few years about porting some of the CAD industry's major applications
(or industry standards as some like to call them). Our email responses
have been overwhelming in favor of a few applications, especially
Autocad (nearly 5000 petitions so far) and SolidWorks. However,
we even have large support for Pixar's RenderMan!
To help these developers move their applications to Mac OS X we
encourage readers who are serious about using them to contact the
developers directly and make elegant and informed arguments for
the Mac OS X platform. Now folks can talk about the new
Apple X11 application tools as a way to ease the transition.
Current Interest in CATIA
We currently have an active
forum thread discussing CATIA
on Mac OS X. The posters are well informed users and much of
the discussion is actually pointing to a CATIA forum where there
is a Pro Mac OS X port discussion going on.
If you are interested in highend CAD and engineering apps or science
apps coming over to Mac OS X and would like to help that process
along (getting the word out, publishing an article, or helping us
organize a petition) please
let us know so we can leverage the Architosh audience in these
