A Breach Is A Breach, No?

If you are like the rest of your computer savvy peers, you probably have benefited musically from your friends' benelovent attitudes toward their music collections. "You like that record? No problem...I burn you a disk." If you weren't the recipient of that line, at least once, perhaps you have copped yourself. Let's face it, even those among us who recognized years ago that perhaps the rights of musical artists were be trampled on by the new peer to peer music networks have likely breached the line of legality ouselves...even if ever so slightly. "Oh, what's one CD going to hurt? They're all rich anyway!"

Some of us have even fashioned elaborate, morally justifiable defenses for stealing music, on the grounds that the record companies have been ripping us off for years. It's just that none of us really ever said so back in 1994! "Hey! that doesn't mean we didn't feeeeel like it back then!" OK, let's say for the sake of argument that we all felt like were all getting f****d all along with the high prices of musici CD's and so when the Napsters of the world came along it was high time we got back at the music business with some home-grown honest-to-goodness music sharing. Not that bad right? Right.

Well...how long did we think we were all entitled to this "getting back at the music business" business anyway? Five years? Ten years? How many years would it take for one to begin to feel justified and made-up for before it just plain felt wrong? Before you felt like the crook you really turned into?

Crook? Yes, I said crook. Because in the final analysis you breached the letter of the law that is plainly written on all copyright material on every single CD you personally purchased from a record company. I'm afraid a breach is a breach, no?
