Institute and University to Build G5 Power Mac Based Supercomputer

New
G5 Power Mac Cluster to Rank in Top 5 Supercomputers Worldwide
According to numerous
reports online Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
will build an Infiniband-based cluster using Apple's
new 64-bit G5 Power Macs. The complete cluster will comprise
of 1,100 dual 2Ghz G5 Power Mac systems and rank in the top supercomputers
in the world. In fact it will list in the top five most powerful
supercomputers as shown below:

IBM Powers PowerPC 970 (aka: G5) and POWER Based Supercomputers
With this annoucement IBM's
microprocessors will dominate the world's fastest, more powerful
supercomputers on the planet with nine (9) out of the top 20 supercomputers
on the list and half of the top six (6) supercomputers on the list.
Intel's percentage in the top six machines is just one machine and
in the top 20 supercomputers Intel's percentage share is just six
machines.
Factoring some basic math each dual processor G5 Power Mac is
yielding 6.3 GFlops of computing power in the new cluster supercomputer.
The estimated cost of just the Power Macs is approximately $2.4
million with a healthy 25 percent discount off the $3000 price
tag of a
base dual processor G5 model.

Analysis: Wow! to see the 64-bit
G5 hit the top five in the Top500
supercomputers so quickly is awesome news for Apple and Macintosh
users everywhere. Hail the G5! If this isn't a wake up call to the
enterprise IT industry then the industry is in a deep coma when
it comes to Apple's technical prowess. IBM and Apple said the G5
was a floating point monster and this clearly proves them right.
Now we can surely see Apple working hard at developing new rack-mount
G5 Xserves and G5 Xserve RAIDs. The word on the vine is that since
the G5, Xserve sales have taken a nose dive.
