Music Event - Interesting Tidbits from Presentation

Review of QuickTime Presentation - Interesting Tidbits

In reviewing the QuickTime presentation, which is now available at Apple.com, there were several interesting tidbits that you can't get out of the press releases. Here they are with commentary:

• There are now 10 million iTunes accounts. Jobs stated that each account has purchased on average 60 songs, so the iTunes Store is seen as a standard new location to get music. These same users will continue to buy. -- {comment: Sure, makes sense, iTunes Music Store is so well designed that it's fun to shop for music}
• iTunes Music Store possibly second largest online store behind Amazon.com. -- {Jobs wasn't sure about this, but with those numbers growing...it can get there pretty darn quick.}
• Madonna. -- {Madonna came on live from the UK and was pretty darn cute in her discussion with Jobs. When asked why she finally put her music up online she said: "I tried to hold out as long as possible, but I got tired of not being able to download my own music." Jobs asked if she had an iPod and she responded: "Of course, that's so da!" She then went on to say that everytime she gets a new one, a new model comes out. "You have got to stop being so prolific, Steve."
• iTunes 5 Search Bar -- {clearly the best new feature is the new search bar mechanism. Gotta try it! Enough said. Also, the most popular part of the Music Store is the "swoosh panels". They are now double-decker and you can customize them to your liking. Very very cool stuff. Apple is so good at software, how will anybody ever expect to catch them when they are just that damn good? }

Other Items:

• iTunes 5 can sync iPods to Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express on Windows machines.
• New Moto Rokr iTunes Phone -- {You can immediately pause your music to pickup a call. When you hang up the music resumes playing. Very nice! The phone also has "airplane mode" so you can use it, for listening to music for example, the entire time on a plane, including take-offs and landings.}
• Moto Ad -- {Madonna is the star of the new ad, but the ad is not nearly as good as the cingular ads.}
• Cingular Ad -- {Ralph de la Vega, COO, Cingular, came on stage and did a really good job talking about Cingular's new enthusiam for the iTunes phone. And he showed the TV ads, which are all pretty cool ads. He said he thought it was Cingular's best marketing campaign to date.}
• iPod and Cars. -- {In 2006 30% if all cars sold in America will feature iPod Connectivity, enabling you to control your iPod from the steering wheels of most cars or the radio controls. Honda, Acura, VW and Audio joined Apple as new OEMs.}

On the iPod nano:

• iPod mini was the most popular model and the one competitors were gunning for. So Apple replaced it with the iPod nano.
• iPod nano is 30% of the volume of nearly every Flash-based competitor in its class but features often far exceed the competition.
• iPod nano is approximately 30% of the volume of Motorola's hot new Razr phone.
• Jobs said the iPod nano is the most revolutionary iPod since the first one and one of Apple's best products ever.
