Leading
Indicators Point to a Future Intorant of Redmond's Complexity
- Pointing the way to Apple's Dominance
Call it the King of Complexity versus the King of the Simple.
Call it the Kingdom of Information Technology versus the
Kingdom of the End User. Or simply call it Microsoft versus
Apple in a decades old battle over all that is electronic
in our lives.
If any single device is foretelling of where this battle
is ultimately headed for humankind, it is the iPod. The shiny
little white devices (they now come in black too) are famous
for this rediculously simple design and interfaces. Oh, and
there is one more thing too. Generally speaking, they just
work too, period.
Twenty years ago seerers of the computerized future foretold
of a more kinder life. A life of more leisure and less work.
A life less hectic and less stressful. What they never fully
imagined was that social and political forces -- many of
which are far beyond the control of any single invidual of
political group, perhaps any one country -- would take us
much in the opposite direction.

Had Enough Culture
But there are signs of a developing I've "had enough" culture,
and companies like Gartner
are starting to predict a seachange.
In a world where things on the opposite side of the globe
affect our lives daily with concerns about our
jobs, our children's future, and our very own survival (as
in the case of global terrorism) it is starting to hit people
that computer technology can be one more aggrevation they
don't need in their lives.

In essence, people are sick and tired of unncessary complexity
with their information technology devices -- whether those
devices are at work, at home, in our car, or on our person
(as in a cell phone).
Several indicators suggest that this sea change is well
underway. Cell phones in particular are forcing users to
realize that IT should be simple. Iconic products such as
the Apple iPod and the Blackberry pager/phones are making
folks realize that they hate their work PCs and television
set-top boxes which do nothing to help curb the tide of complexity
and too many choices.
In the Gartner report, such simple devices are "demystifying
IT ...and making consumers realize that computers are needlessly
complicated." In an effort to simplify, over a million Windows
users have switched to the Macintosh platform this year alone.
And this just may be the tip of the iceberg.
Decades of Faulty Stewardship?
For over two decades Microsoft has built up its dominance
in IT by supporting the growth of a multi-billion dollar
a year IT support industry. Walk in any computer bookstore
and you will find rows and rows of 400 page tombs on managing
the intricacies of Windows XP Professional or Windows Server
2003.
In that same span of time, Apple has often suffered humiliating
criticisms that the Macintosh was just a toy, too cute and
simple to be seriously considered an enterprise tool. Gates
himself has often stated denigrating comments, once saying
that Apple was an "innovator in colored plastics", during
the first iMac phase.
But when Gates was touting the virtues of complexity versus
simplicity in the late 90's was he also envisioning a world
with global cyber-terrorism and the Patriot Act? I don't
think so.
These days simplicity isn't just a designer's virtue the
likes of which a Steve Jobs or Jonathan Ives can truly cherish.
Simplity today means a lot more to everyone
