MWSF:
CAD Industry Puts Positive Spin on Apple-Intel Partnership
and New Mactels

In the general positive wake of Macworld announcements and
Apple's significant run-up in stock price, CAD (computer-aided
design) industry analysts and writers have put a positive
spin on Apple's future with Mactels. And for good reason,
Apple's Macintosh sales continue to grow with impressive
'year-over-year' quarterly unit shipments, something
that a few -- mis-informed -- CAD analysts seem to have
backwards.
However, that is not the case for Lachmi Khemlani, Ph.D.,
who consults and writes
on AEC (architecture/engineering/construction)
technologies and publishes her excellent AECbytes online
newsletter. What were her conclusions this year at Macworld
Expo?
"It is terrific to see Apple's partnership with Intel,
which is ushering in a whole new generation of much more
powerful Macintosh computers. This
partnership could well
serve as the tipping point which would make Apple capture
a larger share of the personal computer market than the
marginal 5% or so it has had for several years now."

Double-Edge Sword
Lachmi
also points
out that the huge success of the iPod is also
like "a double-edge sword, boosting the fortunes of
the company which can give it more resources to continue
to develop the Macintosh and forge critical partnerships
such as the recent one with Intel."

She also points out correctly that the next two years will
be crucial to see where Apple steers its growing ship (towards
media devices like the iPod or towards its Mac lineup) and
offers this parting thought:
"The Macworld shows over the next few years should
let us know whether the Mac will be boosted by the iPod's
success or will be swallowed up by it. If the latter happens,
it would be a real tragedy because both Apple's computers
and the software it develops are far superior to comparable
products and applications developed by any other company
today."
It goes without saying that it's such a joy
to read a mainstream CAD analyst/writer make such a
positive and affirming statement about Apple's software
prowess. For as long as Architosh can
remember (seven years coming up now) most writers have --
and this has been so unfortunate -- seemlying failed to notice
not just Apple's Mac OS X operating system's strengths, but
missed so much of the truly inspiring software innovation
going on in their
professional and consumer (iLife) applications
business. If Lachmi Khemlani sat through Steve
Jobs' keynote address -- and I have a sense that she
did -- then she no doubt saw first hand some of this innovation.
But this positive glow doesn't stop with Lachmi. (continued...)
