to likely allow "fast user switching" effect to Windows XP
and Vista

Reports
and Net info surface suggesting Fast User Switching for
Windows XP
In a previous Architosh article (see: "Commentary:
Virtualization from Intel in future Macs and the Art of
Fast User Switching",
16 Nov. 2005) we commented that Apple could now do to OS
switching what it had already learned to do to multiple user
account switching. That is, Fast User Switching an OS. We
ddescribe the process in detail in the above
article but
reports are now suggesting that Apple will extend its Boot
Camp support in Leopard in a way similar to our suggestion
back in 2005.
Cube the Cube
In our previous view the same Expose
technology that allows
users to switch to a new user account via the Apple menu
(va
la, the cube flips around to a different user account
on Mac OS X) could be taken a step further. To "cube the
cube" was our way of describing the cube flipping vertically
to
a different OS (be it Windows, Linux, Solaris or another
instance of OS X).
Indeed, a new Loop Rumors report is suggesting that Apple
will enable Windows for Fast User Switching. Already today
this technology is alive in Parallels, and although the switch
(complete with cube flipping effect) is a bit rough, it works
and is nothing Apple couldn't figure out how to make smoother.

The
Container Approach
In our previous
article we discussed how Intel's new VT
technology took a "container" approach to virtualization.
It seems that Apple is expressing this same approach in its
OS X user interface in Leopard.
Leopard's Spaces takes
this same container approach in helping the user partition
off critical applications or apply group
logic to applications, somewhat like it was described in Architosh's 2005
article.

Closing Comments
Apple is adding user interface technology to Mac OS X Leopard
in a way that directly reflects much more complex virtualization
technology under the hood. Yet it is doing so in the classic
Apple way: getting so far beyond the complexities under
the hood and expressing a lucid metaphorical UI concept for
it
to the benefit of the user.
With so much talk on the Net about Vista
support in OS X virtualization, it wouldn't be surprising
to learn that Apple has had so much more planned for virtualization
than what the company has said about its Boot Camp program.
And with its Apple hardware now testing out in PC publications
as the fastest
Windows XP systems on the planet, now is the
time to embrace all platforms and say to the world: hey!
we can run that, and better!
