Critical BusinessWeek story on Dell turns into an exhortation
for Apple
by former Dell and PC users

Former and current PC users exhort the virtues of Apple
and its sales model as the recovery method for Dell
|

In
a new BusinessWeek article titled, "Dell: Confounded
by Costs",
BusinessWeek readers, many of whom seem to be current
or former PC users, make the case for Apple and its Macs
and how they sell them in the Apple Stores. A reader, Nicholas
McGhie, a business analyst with The Veridical Group, states
that "Dell's problem is that they do not innovate [the] way
that other manufactures (especially Apple) do."

Nicholas goes straight to the heart of the matter by writing
that it was predicted in the 80's and 90's that PCs were
becoming commodities and that Dell prospered with this model.
However, since Steve Jobs came back to Apple in the late
90's things have changed. Nicholas writes, "it has been shown
that PCs are a lot more personal to people than other electronic
commodities such as dish washers, dryers, etc. People do
so many personal things on them and [they] have become such
an integral part of our lives. Apple has nearly always realized
this...."
China and the Shift to Notebooks
Another reader notes that the shift to notebooks from desktops
has hurt Dell as customers want to "bring a notebook
PC home instead of just ordering it over the net." One
could go on and on about the obvious reasons why this would
be so, such
as feeling the size and weight of a notebook first in person,
rather than the abstract listing of weight on a spec-sheet.
The article notes however that Dell has started selling in
retail outlets like Wal-Mart Stores and Gome in China. However,
Wal-Mart is a far cry from an Apple Store where a fleet of
store staff assist customers in a a luxurious way, as if
they were attending a spa.
Speaking of China, one reader quipped: "Chinese manufactures
will take over the PC businesses just like they have done
with everything else in America -- what is McDonalds paying
these days? See you there."
But China is not Dell's real problem readers note. It may
come down to quality issues. MO states, "Dell makes crappy
accessories and even the user comments back that up. My next
laptop will be an Apple. Dell has focused so long on gaining
market share that they lost focus on the things that mean
the most: service and build quality."
