Apple in the Acquisitions Mode?

4 May 99.

John Crudele, of the New York Post, wrote in part of an article (the last part) that Apple may not only be convincing Wall Street (finally!) but possibly planning an acquisition due to the company's new equity and cash buildup. Exactly what company they possibly are thinking about acquiring is totally up in the air.

Earlier in the year, Steve Jobs did publicly announce Apple's interest in buying 3Com's PalmPilot division, a move which would have helped Apple in the PDA market--the market they single-handedly invented with the Newton MessagePad line of PDA's and then gave up on when the Newtons failed to make a profit. Fans of the Newton MessagePads were generating quite a buzz on the Internet concerning this possible acquisition when it surfaced less than a year ago. Rumors ranged from Apple integrating the Newton OS with the Palm OS, to Apple making an Apple-branded PalmPilot running an unmodified PalmOS.

If Apple is shopping for some company to buy, don't be surprised if you hear its the PalmPilot division again, as the company would still remain a good move for Apple in terms of getting back into the PDA market. The upsides would include investing in a product that is ready for market now, a truly awesome userbase--one that is just as loyal to the PalmPilot (almost) as Mac users to Apple--and a huge software base in which to tap. Other possibilities for an acquisition might include a company that can help Apple reach the SOHO market better than it has in the past or strengthen any of their core markets. Again, it's not known who Apple may be interested in or even if they are in the shopping mode. If they have that much money to burn, perhaps it would be better spent on a media blitz for the new consumer portable?
