Macintosh AEC at Siggraph '99 - Part 1/2

11 Aug 99.

The Siggraph '99 Conference and Exhibition taking place this week in Los Angeles, California, has a number of companies and products directed at the AEC market. Not all of these companies offer compatible products with the Macintosh operating system, but not all of them need to.

Macintosh-based AEC professionals need to remember that being "Macintosh-based" or "Mac-centric" doesn't mean that you can't be mixed platform to some degree. In fact, there are simply too many neat visualization technologies on both Windows NT and UNIX to ignore these two leading platforms in the visualization markets. UNIX, in particular, because of its similarities with the future Mac OS X Consumer and Server products, should be just as carefully looked into as NT products for Mac-centric professionals considering branching out into "cross-platform" territory.

How Many Companies Offer AEC wares at Siggraph '99?

While the statistics for Siggraph attendees shows AEC professionals to be less than ten percent, there are over 38 companies exhibiting products and services for this market. A good percentage of these offer Macintosh products or services to AEC pro's and some companies offer services which are independent of operating systems altogether.

Some of the Macintosh companies include: Abvent, Inc.; auto des sys, Inc.; NewTek; Maxon Computer, Inc.; SGI; and Hewlett-Packard, to name some familiar Mac companies.

To do your own search go to the Siggraph '99 Exhibitors Web site.

Architosh will continue to monitor Siggraph '99 news and events with an ear for what might be valuable for you. For more information go to Macintosh News Network's Siggraph Report.

In Part 2/2 we will look into UNIX and NT wares of interest to AEC.
