Mac AEC News: Bentley proposes aecXML standard

16 Aug 99.

Bentley Announces aecXML for Architecture, Engineering and Construction.

According to a press release, Bentley announced that it has developed the initial specification for aecXML-an XML schema for project and business-to-business communication for AEC. The preliminary specifications is now ready for industry review and comment, Bentley is seeking interested parties prior to submission to Microsoft Biz Talk Framework, scheduled later this month. Keith Bentley, CEO of Bentley explains:

"aecXML is an extension of, rather than a replacement for, today's software and databases. Those tools individually function well and are fine-tuned for their domains. What's necessary is a vocabulary for exchanging their important A/E/C facts and figures between systems."

Richard Faris, executive vice president of Primavera Systems says, "Our hope is that all A/E/C software developers will join this industry-focused effort. Once an industry-approved XML schema has been agreed to, we will integrate the standard into Primavera Project Planner and Expedition."

Bentley encourages other software companies, construction firms, academic institutions, building product manufacturers, information publishers, and anyone else with an interest in contributing to an industry-wide aecXML schema, to get involved early in this process to exchange ideas. To facilitate this exchange, Bentley has formed the aecXML Working Group and asked Jerry Laiserin to act as its interim executive director.

Macintosh AEC and CAD developers need to participate in this effort as well, to order to ensure that their software architecture roadmaps and technologies will be compatible with an aecXML standard. At the moment, the aecXML.org website is not yet functional, and it is unclear who the industry participants are and if Macintosh developers are interested in taking a part in this proposal. Bentley's interest in developing working relationships with Mac AEC developers is unclear, as the company's recent position on the Macintosh platform and Apple in general has grown vague and uncertain.

Further information about the aecXML Working Group will be presented at The Proactive Engineering Symposium in Philadelphia, PA (http://www.bentley.com/biuc/ ), on September 29 - October 1, 1999. More information can be obtained at www.aecXML.org [Editor's note: this site is currently under construction and is hosted at www.bentley.com/aecXML until August 20, 1999].
