Architosh Survey Preview: What type of platforms do you have at your office? - early results may surprise you!

30 Sep 99.

As with our earlier survey preview we are looking at one of the important questions in the Architosh survey: "Which type of computer platforms do you have at your office?"

Mixed platform environments total one half of all Architosh survey respondents, while all Macintosh environments amount to only 47%. Surprisingly, 3% of the survey respondents work in All Windows environments, while no respondents work in mixed Mac/UNIX environments, mixed Mac/Windows environments, or All Windows NT environments.

We found it interesting to see that 15% of survey participants work in mixed environments that include some form of UNIX. These might likely be environments like advanced 3D and animation shops or large AEC firms which employ UNIX servers. Another surprise was to see that no participants work in mixed Windows/UNIX environments or All NT environments, yet 3% of participants work in All Windows (95/98/NT mix) environments. This last group most likely includes those individuals who are forced to work on Windows at the office but have Macs at home and/or have used them in firms before.

What Does the Mix Mean?

Since this is our first survey we can't tell if there are any trends going on and it would be pure speculation to suggest any. It should not surprise anybody to find out that 35% of participants work in mixed Macintosh/Windows environments. And some all Mac firms which have only one or two PC's around for AutoCAD conversions and accounting may be accounted for in that 35% group, whereas they should really say they are all Macintosh.

We would suggest that readers anticipate two possible trends: one that more all Mac firms go cross-platform (specifically to NT) over time and, two, that more UNIX and/or Linux show up in these cross platform environments. It is likely that mixed Mac/Windows/UNIX environments increase over time due to the rise in popularity of Linux (and other UNIX's) and the whole open-source movement, as well as the anticipated increase in the use of UNIX-based workstations from companies like Sun and SGI.

In the future we will include better breakdowns, including placing Mac OS X in the mix as well as separating Linux from the UNIX's. The big news here is that perhaps less than half of all Architosh readers work in strictly all Mac environments -- suggesting that the Mac AEC world is really a cross-platform world.

Please take the survey if you have not already and write in to tell us what you think. Thanks.
