VectorWorks helps student win International competition
Architosh Press Report: VectorWorks Design Wins International Architectural Competition
Columbia, Maryland (May 7, 2001)¸ Nemetschek North America today announced that one of the three top prize winning designs of Yourope, a European architectural competition for students, was a VectorWorks design. Dennis Clayton Matthiesen und Kasimir Altzweig, of Hamburg, Germany submitted their winning version of a European Embassy to represent a politically united European nation. VectorWorks was one of the major sponsors for this design competition in which 437 entries were received and not just from European nations, but also from the United States, Japan, India, Latin America and various other countries.
The task presented by the competition was the Design of an Embassy building for a politically united Europe. Students were summoned by Yourope to develop ideas and visions for the political future of Europe. These ideas were achieved in a design for a common European embassy that reflected the idea of a politically united Europe, the organization of the individual departments, and finally the spatial conception.
The jury report for Matthiesen and AltzweigÔs design read, "The project is a convincing demonstration of how architecture can organise, articulate and condense a complex social institution into a legible spatial allegory. The European Embassy is organized and presented as a unifying frame that allows for the differentiation of various national identities within. The spatial construct is build up through the superposition and interarticulation of layers whereby the distinction of political versus cultural aspects of the embassy is expressed as a hard-edged world above versus a smooth and melded world below ÷ the one being the blurred mirror image of the other. The formal and spatial virtuosity of the authors fulfills the promise of making a complex system of social relations legible in space."
Another VectorWorks design won an honorary mention and was created by Irene Amanti Lund and David Christophe from Bruxelles, Belgium. The designs can be seen at http://www.fh-konstanz.de/yourope/
