ArchiCAD 8 Release Seminar in Cambridge: Post Event Notes

The ArchiCAD 8 event at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts, went very well, with a full house of architecture professionals...both users and non-users checking out this exciting update. I happened to attend with a good architect friend of mine who is an Autocad user who just recently attended a Revit presentation.

Casual Notes

After the event we went into the famous Harvard Square for dinner where we talked about architecture, CAD technology, and Autocad. From his perspective, as an Autocad user, it is clear that either Revit or ArchiCAD represent the future of architectural CAD because of their "integration of all of the aspects of CAD" in one package. And because they are model-based CAD programs.

Having just went to a Revit presentation, I asked him how he compared the two. From his eyes it seemed that ArchiCAD was better integrated, appeared slightly easier to use in moving across the entire application, which includes going from ArchiCAD proper to PlotMaker, and had better management capabilities.

A particular feature which impressed the crowd at the event was the ease at which you can publish your project to PDF documents -- a very valuable feature for sharing drawing information with others. During the event I kept good notes and we were given some materials. I will post more info in a report early next week.

One More Event Left

There is still a chance to see ArchiCAD 8 in Providence, Rhode Island, later today at 3:30 - 5:30pm. Providence is about 50-60 minutes from Boston, depending on how fast you drive and the traffic. For more info on signing up go here.

PostScript

My Autocad friend happens to love my Titanium PowerBook G4, a lot. After all, who wouldn't. Unfortunately, I couldn't convince him to run Autocad on it under VirtualPC. However, as he noted, with ArchiCAD you have the flexibility to run it on different platforms. So if he moved to ArchiCAD, he can have his cake and eat it too...as they say.
