280+ Architecture Firms show support of Macintosh

More than 280 Macintosh-based architecture firms have now joined the Architosh International Web Users Group, a members listing associated with the leading online Macintosh CAD/3D/AEC Web site. The listing was originally created to help show public support of the Macintosh platform in architecture specifically but has grown up to include 3D professionals and other related designers using Mac CAD/3D products.

"We are extremely pleased with the growth of the AIWUG Lists over the last year," mentions Anthony Frausto-Robledo, Architosh's editor. "The AIWUG Lists do a number of positive things for the Macintosh community, but most importantly they demonstrate that hundreds of firms are proud to be using the Macintosh as their computer system platform...and are very satisfied with the results."

Numbers Are Telling A Story

The AIWUG Lists include different categories for CAD and 3D professionals but the largest category by far is the AEC List (architecture/engineering/construction) where 280 AEC firms are listed, mostly architecture, planning, interiors and urban design firms.

"280 may sound small to some," says Anthony Frausto-Robledo, "but that number equates to the total number of architecture firms in two to three major US cities, such as Boston plus Washington DC, for example." "It actually equates to many thousands of professionals including architects, interns, support staff and CAD technicians—all using the Macintosh platform."

Members Tell a Compelling Story

Many members of the AIWUG Lists are extremely important and influential architecture and design firms. Some on the list have prestigious Rizzoli monographs dedicated to their work and are influential heroes to thousands of architecture students in colleges around the world. Such firms include Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Koetter Kim & Associates, and Koning Eizenberg Architecture, to mention a few.

Many firms are quite large in size and have multiple offices around the world, proving that the Macintosh is a viable "enterprise level" platform for technical design corporations. Yet a good majority of the firms are of regular size and fame and include a diversity of individuals, personalities and design philosophies. All of them believe in the Mac.

Members of the AIWUG Lists come from all over the world—you can scan a sorted list by country here, for example—and utilize a wide range of CAD/3D software on the Macintosh. And you can see from our first Firm Profile series article the particular approach to computing in design using Macintosh by reading about AIWUG firm member M. J. Neal Architects here.
