IBM's new 64-bit
PowerPC 970: Guide to the Future
PowerPC Future
Today IBM will announce the technical details of the new PowerPC
970, a new Power4-derived microprocessor which features 64-bit capability
with 32-bit backwards compatibility. We will cover the technical
details of this announcement as it becomes available.
While there have been rumors about Apple's possible plans to move
to Intel's Pentium architecture chips, including the possibility
of moving to AMD's x86 compatible 64/32-bit Hammer series Athlon,
none of that will seem to matter much after today's IBM announcement.
We will have more on that later today.
Upcoming: Stay tuned to this
report as we fill in the details later today, including a chronological
summary of our past G5 information and what happened to the Motorola
G5. Additionally, we will summarize architectural differences between
this new chip, older PowerPC designs and x86.
Microsprocessor Comparison Chart
We have put together a microprocessor comparison chart between
the known elements of the IBM PowerPC 970 and the Intel Pentium
4 and upcoming AMD "Hammer series" Athlon 64-bit chip.
