MWNY: Alias/Wavefront makes a Splash at Macworld!
Architosh had the priviledge of talking indepth with the makers of Maya for Mac OS X at Macworld last week. Here is what they had to say about the Mac and Maya.
Reaching the Mac Audience with Maya for Mac OS X
While being treated to a private viewing of Maya for Mac OS X the folks at Alias/Wavefront spoke to us about just how they planned to reach Mac folks with this new software. "The focus is on accessibility", they stated, explaining how Alias/Wavefront plans on reaching the traditional 2D graphics folks by offering extensive learning and assistive tools and technologies to deliver high-end 3D to the traditional [2D] Mac audience.
And the Mac folks seemed quite interested! During the entire expo the Alias/Wavefront booth was packed with Mac users trying to learn more about this high-end software. The Maya folks had a good line-up of demonstrations and special guest speakers (leading users of Maya from major movie and special effects studios, as well as gaming folks). The whole presentation at Macworld was quite excellent, debunking the myth that major 3D software vendors can't do an excellent show at the New York venue.
Maya for Mac OS X: Pre Order Special
In addition to the large and excellent booth, the Maya folks had a show special for those interested in trying out Maya for OS X. The offer last from July 18th, 2001 to the end of December, 2001. Click here to learn more.
Notes on Maya for Mac OS X
Although Maya was chosen to be featured during the Macworld keynote presentation, it was good to see it up close, privately (not an easy thing considering the large crowds packing in the Maya booth).
Maya is not some whimpy port job for OS X. The application is a full OS X app with support for Aqua, Apple's OpenGL implementation, and QuickTime technologies. With over 26 million lines of code (for reference Ashlar's Vellum Draft is about 850,000 lines of code) the task of getting Maya for OS X has been a large one. And one that is not made without some serious committment to Apple and the future of the Mac platform. We asked them when they first got started on the coding and they told us 17 months ago (approximately February 2000).
Maya Complete for Mac OS X is currently in final beta and getting very close to completion. During our private demo the product ran smoothly and looked great under the Aqua interface. We were shown the making of the robot animation used in the keynote presentation, with a particular emphasis on the real-world physics engine in Maya.
We were also told that Maya for OS X has a complete modeling environment integrated into the application. Of course, you can import models into Maya from numerous sources as well. Some interesting features include the hot box menu system wherein a group of menus appear anywhere on the screen (dependent on cursor position) providing quick access to the full menu system and the ability to render a user-defined region of the model quickly and to any particular settings.
